The History of the Languedoc:   The French Revolution onwards

The Revolution seems to have relatively little effect in the Languedoc, except that much private property fell into the hands of the state to be sold-off, vandalised or left to decay. The only other notable effect was that many historical records were burned.

In 1793 Spain declared war on revolutionary France. The Roussillon experienced yet more Franco-Spanish fighting, until September 1794, when the French army once again established control over the area.

During the spanish Civil war (1936-9) the Languedoc welcomed refugees from Franco's government. You will find a few memororials - and many Spanish surnames - here.

During the Second World War the Languedoc was part of Vichy France. Towards the end of the war the Germans took control of Vichy France and the area saw resistance activity. For more on this click on the following linkfor information on the Second World War
