The Counts of Toulouse: ( The Name in Occitan. Click here to find out more about occitan.  Coms de Toloza, 1148-1194):  Ramon V (1134-1194) ( The Name in Occitan. Click here to find out more about occitan. Raimon V, The Name in Occitan. Click here to find out more about occitan. Raymond V)

Arms of the Counts of Toulouse. Click for a larger image in a new window. Raymond V was the son of Alphonse-Jordan. When Alphonse died in the Holy Land in 1148, the county of Toulouse passed to Raymond, who was at the time 14 years old.

In 1154, Raymond married Constance of France, daughter of king Louis VI of France and widow of Eustace IV of Boulogne. They had three children:

  • Raymond, who succeeded his father as Raymond VI, Count of Toulouse
  • Baldwin, who would subsequently take the part of the French crusaders against his own brother.
  • Adelaide, who married Roger II Trencavel

Raymond V was implicated in the gathering Cathar crisis. In 1176, Guilhem the Bishop of Albi organised the council of Lombers, attended by both clerics and local rulers, including Raymond V, and his wife Constance, Raymond Trencavel, and the representatives of the Cathars. The crisis later developed into the Albigensian Crusade directed by the Roman Church against the Cathars of the Languedoc

Raymond V's second wife was Richilde, widow of Ramon Berenguer III, Count of Provence.

Raymond V, like other Counts of Toulouse, is remembered with affection and respect by the people of the Languedoc and especially the citizens of Toulouse. This plaque on the right reads:

On 6th January 1189 by a solemn Act Raymond V Count of Toulouse confirmed to the Capitouls, representatives of the people of the town, the liberties which founded the independence of the municipality of Toulouse.
