The Climate of, and Weather in, the Languedoc:   Wind:   Le Vent Tramontane or Tramontana

Languedoc Winds: The Tramontane from the north-west, the Cers from the West or South West, the Sirocco from the south, the Autan (blanc and noir), from the south-east, and the warm marine Marin wind from the Mediterranean. Le Vent Tramontane.  (Tramuntana en Catalan).  The Tramontane wind blows from the north-west in the bas Languedoc and the Roussillon.
It is the local, gentler version of the Mistral wind
It is dry, cold and often violent, carrying air from polar regions.
In summer it brings clear blue skies and relief from the heat.  In winter it just brings cold air.
If the weather over the Mediterranean Sea is perturbed the Tramonane can cause heavy rain: "Quan plou de tramuntana, plou de gana" - When the Tramontane rains, it really rains.
