Living in the Languedoc:      Utilities

Gas. Town gas not supplied to many villages. Many people use butane, kept in large white tanks which are topped up annually.

Elecricity. Electricity 220 V AC 50 Hz
Plug type Standard European 2 pin type
Light fittings Screw and bayonet

Expect interruptions in the electricity supply during thunder storms, snow storms and high winds. You will also notice distinct variations in light-bulb brightness, presumably caused by fluctuating voltage.

Telephone. No broadband outside major towns - though this is gradually getting better. Mobile reception is patchy, especially in the mountainous areas.

Water. Drinking water is safe in all areas, but pure spring water is treated with foul tasting chemicals before being piped into homes - part of a Water Company scam, supported by H&E legislation. Consequently any people in the Languedoc make weekly visits to their nearest natural spring to bottle their own water at source.
